The pultrusion process uses a compound of materials formed by taking fibreglass as the reinforcing material and a thermosetting resin as the base. The fibreglass’ continuous roving enables the product to have an extremely high longitudinal strength while the fibreglass mat (continuous strand mat, knitted mat and so on) ensures the product has a good transverse strength. The thermosetting resin base usually consists of an unsaturated polyester resin, a vinyl resin, an epoxy resin or a phenolic resin. The resin base enables the product to possess good anti-corrosion properties and the use of different resins enables products to be made suitable for various corrosive environments. Adding an ultraviolet inhibitor or fire retardant will enable a product to possess outstanding resistance to aging or feature anti-flammable properties.

Pultrusion is an advanced mechanised compound materials moulding process that produces random length FRP profiles with similar size sections. The process offers a high-production efficiency, small cutting loss, no waste material and a minimal environmental impact. The first stage sees the fibreglass continuously roving and mat on creels pass through a resin bath under the traction of a pultrusion machine. Next, the required shape is created through moulding and this is then cured by a heating die. Finally, cooling is followed by auto-sawing.
